Let a candidate see the work behind the job title

A useful job preview shows the ordinary work as well as the appealing moments. It gives candidates a clearer basis for deciding whether a role fits.

Behind the title

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management describes realistic job previews as a way to communicate favorable and unfavorable aspects of a job. The purpose is to help applicants understand the role before deciding whether to pursue it.

In culinary work, polished dishes and team photographs tell only part of the story. Schedule patterns, physical surroundings, coordination, and decision authority can shape the everyday experience just as much.

Tell the whole story

A truthful preview includes support as well as demands. Showing only the hardest moment can intimidate; showing only the highlights can create expectations the job cannot meet. A clearer account explains what the work requires and what resources help people do it.

Candidates also need room to ask practical questions without having their commitment doubted. That conversation can benefit both sides. An informational preview should remain distinct from unpaid productive work and follow the employer’s hiring, safety, and compensation practices.
